THE FARM HOUSE      (scroll down)

The contemporary farmhouse style goes far beyond nostalgia. A farmhouse offers the promise of reconnecting with natural rhythms - with the four seasons and the cycles of life.

The site often helps shape the design of the home that will be built on it. That was the case for this one storey, thirty-five hundred square foot home nestled in the rural hills of Ontario close to Toronto. The spring fed, two acre pond creates a natural focus for the building and the principal rooms are organized around views toward it. The Great Room, Principal Bedroom and Screened Porch all give onto a landscaped courtyard which provides definition between the home and its bucolic setting.

This five bedroom home was designed as a weekend getaway for the owners from Toronto, their grown children and extended family. It offers an antidote to a commercialized, information glutted world. It represents a chance to get back to basics and a reasonable pace.

The exterior architectural detailing is simple and understated, employing low maintenance materials. The pre-finished metal roof and pre-finished wood siding are reminiscent of the local architectural vernacular. The fieldstone, used at the base of the house as well as chimneys, was sourced from the fields of the fifty acre farmstead. The triple pane windows are graciously proportioned and designed with traditional looking mullions and muntins.

The architectural interiors are characterized by a combined palette of painted and natural wood. The Foyer is a generous space with a vaulted ceiling, Belvedere for natural light and provides an immediate view through to the pond and park like landscape beyond.

The home’s main gathering space, The Great Room, includes a beamed ceiling that unites the Kitchen, Dining and Living Area. The large fireplace, constructed of local stone is a focal point of the space.
